Bra Boys, Bondi Blonde, and inappropriate sponsorship

posted by John Surname @ 11:52 AM
I was browsing the EG section of The Age, when my eyes fell across an ad for the reprehensible new documentary Bra Boys. In the bottom corner of the ad, something caught my eye - it turned out to be the logo for the shitty new beer Bondi Blonde.

A closer look:

Now, I'm no expert on these matters, but surely sponsoring a film which glorifies a violent gang is a fucking bad idea. I can only imagine what John Singleton was thinking.

Filmmaker: Hey, um, I'm making this film about the Bra Boys and I'd like your sponsorship.

John Singleton: Who?

Filmmaker: The Bra Boys. They are...um...a surf life saving club?

John Singleton: Sounds good. For you see, here at Bondi Blonde, we're all for the beach.

Filmmaker: Been to Bondi lately?

John Singleton: Shit no. But young people like Bondi, so if we associate with it, those idiots will buy our beer. Will your film have surfing action?

Filmmaker: Yes.

John Singleton: Then I'm sold! Here, have a Bondi Blonde.

Filmmaker: *drinks* It tastes like crap.

John Singleton: I know.

Bondi Blonde is also a sponsor of pro-surfer Koby Abberton (a member of the Bra Boys), which is slightly different to throwing their name behind a biased film. Bondi Blonde are hoping to associate their name with the Bra Boys, which is disturbing. Are Carlton Draught going to sponsor the Hell's Angels? Are Cooper's Pale Ale going to sponsor this blog? By sponsoring a film like this, they are endorsing it's self-serving views. I don't expect Cooper's will be endorsing much of what I write here.

All I'm asking is do Bondi Blonde want to associate themseleves with a group of people who, without provocation, attacked a group of off duty police officers? Is this what John Singleton thinks will attract youth? Honestly, that kind of image will attract some people, but mostly idiots and delinquents, not the yuppie class and women the beer is aimed at.

I am yet to see Bra Boys (I expect I'll get a bootleg copy) but from what I've heard about it, it lacks a neutral view. David gave it a scathing review on At The Movies last week (don't be fooled, he actually gave it 2 and a half, not 3 and a half). I think the other side of the Bra Boys needs to be told so Bondi Blonde can decide if they've really made the right decision.
